📸 A Snapshot of Thornaby’s Industrial Heritage
This remarkable photograph captures a team of skilled workers at Head Wrightson in the early 1980s, standing proudly alongside a pressure vessel destined for Russia. Thanks to the memories shared by former welder Ian Brumpton, we know many of the people pictured and the story behind this impressive project, which had to reach its destination before winter conditions set in.
It’s photographs and personal recollections like these that help keep Thornaby’s rich engineering and manufacturing history alive for future generations.

Sometimes talking helps. Sometimes listening helps. Sometimes simply being around others can make a difference.
This Thursday, a special one-off Tackle The Mind session will be taking place at Queen’s Campus Sports Centre, offering adult men a relaxed, informal and supportive space to come together, talk, listen and connect.
The session will include:
💬 Structured conversation in a safe and supportive environment
🏃 Light physical activity
☕ Informal time afterwards to chat, have a drink and spend time together
There’s no pressure to share anything you don’t want to, and you don’t need to be experiencing a particular problem to attend. Whether things have been difficult recently or you’d simply benefit from getting out, connecting with others and having some time away from everyday pressures, you’re welcome to come along.
The session is delivered by Shape The Play in partnership with Durham University, with a new Tackle The Mind programme also due to begin in September.
