Today, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice and resilience of all those who served during the Second World War, as we mark VJ Day.
Victory over Japan brought an end to six years of conflict and marked a moment of hope, reflection and remembrance for countless families across the world.
We honour the servicemen and women who fought for our freedom, remember those who never returned, and recognise the strength of those who lived through the hardships of war.
Lest we forget.

📸 A Snapshot of Thornaby’s Industrial Heritage
This remarkable photograph captures a team of skilled workers at Head Wrightson in the early 1980s, standing proudly alongside a pressure vessel destined for Russia. Thanks to the memories shared by former welder Ian Brumpton, we know many of the people pictured and the story behind this impressive project, which had to reach its destination before winter conditions set in.
It’s photographs and personal recollections like these that help keep Thornaby’s rich engineering and manufacturing history alive for future generations.
A special thank you to Thornaby Archives for sharing this wonderful image and helping to preserve the stories of the people who helped shape our town’s industrial legacy. ❤️
